At least 59 people have been confirmed dead as floodwaters devastated Abidjan, the economic capital of Ghana’s western neighbour, Ivory Coast.

According to a report by news.sky.com, the deaths were confirmed by a spokesperson for the Ivorian government, Amadou Coulibaly.

The spokesperson is also reported to have said that authorities now fear the death toll could rise as search operations continue.

Several days of torrential rainfall, which started on Saturday, June 27, 2026, led to flooding and landslides in several communities in Abidjan, resulting in the deaths of the victims.

The Minister of National Cohesion of Ivory Coast also reported that some of the deaths were recorded in the municipalities of Attécoubé and Yopougon in Abidjan.

The report of the flood deaths in Ivory Coast comes just hours after similar fatalities were recorded in Ghana

Ghana’s capital, Accra, was submerged under water as a result of heavy downpours that began on June 29, 2026.

Videos of the Accra floods showed residents swimming through neck-deep water to rescue trapped neighbours, while vehicles were abandoned on flooded roads.

Ghana's Ministry of the Interior has confirmed that 12 people died after being swept away by floodwaters, with about seven people still missing.
