A resident of Alajo, identified as Atinka, has explained why he demanded GH¢3,000 from officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) before assisting in the retrieval of a lifeless body trapped inside a vehicle following the devastating floods that swept through parts of Accra on June 29.

Speaking in a video shared by Adom TV on July 1, 2026, Atinka insisted that recovering dead bodies is not part of his responsibility, arguing that such operations fall under the mandate of the security services, particularly the police and the Navy.

He explained that despite this, he chose to help because emergency personnel struggled to access and retrieve the body trapped in the deep drains.

"This job is not my job. It's supposed to be the Navy and the police, but because I'm also human, like the person in the drain, I had to help retrieve it," he said.

The incident involved the discovery of a lifeless body inside a commercial minibus, popularly known as a trotro, which was found lodged in a drain at Alajo after floodwaters receded on July 1.

According to reports, residents who inspected the stranded vehicle discovered the body inside and alerted the authorities.

The circumstances surrounding the victim's death remain unclear, and officials are yet to establish how the deceased became trapped in the vehicle or formally identify the victim.

The discovery has added to the growing death toll from the June 29 floods, which caused widespread destruction across several communities in the Greater Accra Region, submerging homes, businesses and major roads after hours of torrential rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems.

Addressing Parliament on June 30, 2026, Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak disclosed that at least 12 people had died as a result of the floods, while seven others were still missing as of Tuesday morning.

He further disclosed that the disaster displaced 7,761 households and affected more than 38,000 people nationwide.
