Africa arrived at the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage with history on its side.

Never before had so many African nations reached this phase of the competition, raising hopes that the continent could produce another fairytale run.

Instead, the Round of 32 has become a painful lesson in how football can change in an instant.

South Africa, Ivory Coast, DR Congo and Senegal are all out.

Three of them held winning positions before suffering dramatic late comebacks, while South Africa were seconds away from forcing extra time before their resistance was finally broken.

USA march on but will Balogun red card prove costly?

The heartbreak began with South Africa.

Bafana Bafana frustrated Canada for more than 90 minutes in a disciplined defensive display and looked destined to take the contest into extra time, but in stoppage time, Stephen Eustáquio struck the decisive goal, ending South Africa’s remarkable tournament and sending Canada into the Round of 16.

It was a cruel finish for a side that had already made history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time since.

Then came Ivory Coast.

The Elephants fought back after falling behind to Norway and looked capable of pushing the game beyond regulation', but with only minutes remaining, Erling Haaland delivered the decisive blow, scoring a late winner to seal a 2-1 victory for the Norwegians.

Ivory Coast had competed strongly throughout the contest, only to see their World Cup dream disappear in the closing stages.

If Ivory Coast’s exit hurt, DR Congo’s was even more agonising.

The Congolese stunned England by taking the lead inside seven minutes through Brian Cipenga and defended bravely for much of the match.

England struggled to break them down until Harry Kane finally found the equaliser in the 75th minute.

Just eleven minutes later, Kane struck again, completing a dramatic comeback that denied DR Congo one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.

A place in the Round of 16 slipped away in the final quarter of an hour.

Yet nothing compared to Senegal’s collapse.

The Lions of Teranga were cruising at 2-0 against Belgium after goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaïla Sarr.

With five minutes of normal time remaining, they appeared to have one foot in the last 16.

Then everything unravelled.

Romelu Lukaku sparked Belgium’s comeback in the 86th minute before Youri Tielemans levelled the match three minutes later.

Forced into extra time, Senegal could not recover from the momentum shift.

In the 125th minute, after a VAR-reviewed penalty decision, Tielemans converted from the spot to complete one of the greatest comebacks in World Cup knockout history and send Senegal crashing out 3-2.

The pattern across Africa’s exits is impossible to ignore.

South Africa were moments from extra time. Ivory Coast were minutes from prolonging their fight. DR Congo were protecting a famous lead deep into the second half. Senegal were just five minutes away from victory.

Instead, all four watched their dreams disappear in the dying moments.

For a continent that celebrated unprecedented representation in the knockout rounds, the Round of 32 has delivered a brutal reminder that at the World Cup, matches are not won until the final whistle.

Africa came closer than ever to making history, but in four different ways, history slipped through its fingers.
