The heavy rains that battered Accra on Monday and some days of the week left a trail of destruction, claiming lives and sweeping away properties.

Cars parked in homes and workshops were submerged in floodwaters, while others were dragged into drains by the sheer force of the torrents.

For local mechanics, the devastation has been severe just as those counting their losses.

Vehicles entrusted to them for repairs and maintenance were caught in the floods, leaving engines ruined and workshops overwhelmed.

At the Alajo Railways workshop, one mechanic lamented the dire impact on their livelihood.

He explained that floodwaters had seeped into car engines, and when they reached out to owners for support, the response was disheartening.

The mechanic stressed that without financial assistance, they cannot shoulder the burden of repairs alone.

He called on government to come to their aid so they can heave a sigh of relief in these trying times.

“We are mechanics, and the vehicles here do not belong to us. Floodwaters entered their engines, and when we called the owners, they told us to find a way to repair them. We are appealing to the government to come to our aid because we do not have the money to fix all these vehicles,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance has announced the release of GH¢350 million from the Contingency Fund to support emergency relief efforts and flood mitigation measures.

The funds have been transferred into a dedicated National Disaster Management Committee account to finance the National Emergency Flood Response Programme.

This intervention, directed by President John Dramani Mahama, aims to provide immediate relief to victims while laying the groundwork for long-term solutions to Ghana’s recurring flooding crisis.

The government noted that the move reflects its commitment to swift humanitarian assistance and resilience-building for affected communities.
