President John Dramani Mahama has paid tribute to Ghana’s senior citizens, describing them as the foundation of the nation’s progress, while reaffirming the government's commitment to strengthening healthcare, pensions, and social protection systems to ensure dignified ageing.
Speaking at the Republic Day Senior Citizens’ Luncheon at the Presidential Villa in Accra on July 1, 2026, President Mahama expressed deep appreciation for the lifelong service of the elderly across key sectors, noting their significant contribution to national development.
Mahama assures senior citizens of stronger social protection and better pensions
He reiterated ongoing efforts under the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme aimed at growing the economy and improving livelihoods, including enhanced support for retirees.
The President also encouraged senior citizens to enrol in the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares) to access support for the treatment of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
He further called for continued respect, care, and support for the elderly within families and communities across the country.
