Residents had to walk through floodwaters for their daily activities
The issue of flooding in parts of the country, particularly in Accra, has persisted for decades.
One of the hardest-hit areas during the recent floods was Alajo, where heavy rains that began on Sunday, June 28, and continued into Monday, June 29, 2026, caused the Odaw drain to overflow its banks, submerging homes and displacing residents.

Videos from the incident showed fast-moving floodwaters sweeping vehicles into the drain, while several properties suffered extensive damage.
However, it appears this is not the first time Alajo has experienced such devastation.
The resurfaced video sighted by GhanaWeb on X on July 6, 2026, showed how the area suffered a similar fate in June 1973, when heavy rains triggered widespread flooding across Accra.
The River Odaw overflowed, homes collapsed in Alajo, roads and communication networks were cut off, and many families were displaced as parts of the city came to a standstill.
According to a video shared by Ghana Facts and History on July 3, 2026, the footage captured the aftermath of the June 1973 floods in Accra.
The video showed collapsed houses, with affected residents assessing the damage caused by the floods.
Mattresses, clothing and other household items soaked by the floodwaters were seen spread out under the sun to dry.
It also showed residents clearing sand and debris that had been washed onto roads and walkways.

Although the floodwaters had receded, pools of muddy water remained in parts of the community, with both children and adults seen walking through them.
