Director of Research and Innovation at Kumasi Technical University(KsTU), Prof Smart Sarpong, has expressed confidence that President John Dramani Mahama has the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy by addressing Ghana’s persistent flooding challenges.

Speaking on Metro TV, Prof Sarpong said the President, who has indicated that his current term is his last in office, has a unique chance to implement bold reforms without political pressure for re-election.

“I know President Mahama is cut out to leave a great legacy before he leaves. He has admitted that this is his last term, and if he sets his goal to solve this flooding issue, he can do it,” he said.

He argued that the flooding problem is solvable if leadership is decisive, but cautioned that internal resistance within government could be a major obstacle.

“The impediment might come from his own people, not people on the street or the opposition, but his own people,” he noted.

Prof Sarpong said Ghana's flooding challenges are largely driven by institutional weaknesses and poor coordination among key agencies, stressing that the President must ensure discipline within the system to achieve meaningful results.

Despite the challenges, he maintained that successful intervention in flood control would significantly define President Mahama's legacy.
