Re-arrest of Ex-NAFCO CEO: Here are reliefs his lawyers are seeking from the court

Godfred Yeboah Dame, lead counsel for former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba, through an application to the court has outlined the reliefs being sought by the legal team following the arrest of his client at the airport.

According to the application, the legal representative of Chief Executive Officer of NAFCO is seeking orders from the court regarding his client’s detention and the enforcement of an earlier order permitting him to travel abroad for medical treatment.

State files same charges against Hanan; only two new charges added to 20-count case

Hanan was reportedly arrested on July 4, 2026, at the airport while he was set to travel to London for a scheduled eye specialist appointment, despite the court having granted him permission to travel.

The legal team believes the arrest was inconsistent with the court’s order and has therefore filed an application seeking the intervention of the court.

Here are the reliefs being sought by his lawyers

1. An order directing the Bureau of National Intelligence (BNI) to produce Abdul Hanan Abdul-Wahab before the court.

2. An order compelling the BNI to comply with the court’s travel order dated June 29, 2026, which permitted him to travel abroad for medical treatment.

3. A confirmation of the court order allowing Abdul Hanan to travel outside the country for medical treatment.

4. Any other orders the court may consider necessary in the circumstances.

Godfred Dame alleged that Abdul Hanan’s wife and lawyers were denied access to him at the BNI headquarters for more than 24 hours after his arrest.

Meanwhile, an Accra High Court has fixed July 10, 2026, for the hearing of a habeas corpus application challenging his client’s continued detention.

The application, filed at the High Court’s specialised division in Accra, is seeking an order directing the Director of the BNI and the Attorney General to produce Hanan in court and justify the legal basis for his detention.

Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, had earlier disclosed that Hanan was arrested at the Accra International Airport on July 4, 2026, after investigators received information that he had allegedly attempted to withdraw funds from a frozen bank account before travelling to the UK.

The former NAFCO CEO is currently standing trial on charges of stealing and causing financial loss to the Republic.
