Watch as Asanteman throng Manhyia to pay homage to newly enstooled Queen Mother

Tradition has begun for Asantehemaa, Nana Ama Bonsu, who has been enstooled as Nana Yaa Akyaa II, following her appointment by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as the Queen Mother of Asanteman.

Following her enstoolment, Nana Yaa Akyaa II has, in line with tradition, sat in state to receive homage from traditional leaders and well-wishers.

A video shared by Opemsuo Radio on Facebook on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, shows the Asantehemaa dressed in an all-white cloth and scarf, which symbolise victory, as she received greetings from visitors.

She was flanked by women believed to be her attendants.

Another video also captured scenes of dancing and jubilation at her palace as people celebrated her enstoolment.

As the 15th Asantehemaa, Nana Yaa Akyaa II takes up a position that is central to the leadership and traditions of the Ashanti Kingdom.

 

The Asantehemaa is the highest-ranking woman in Asanteman and is responsible for protecting the customs, values and heritage of the kingdom.

The office has long played an important role in the administration of the traditional state.

One of the Asantehemaa's most important duties is to nominate a successor to the Golden Stool whenever the position of the Asantehene becomes vacant.

This responsibility makes the Queen Mother a key figure in ensuring a smooth transition of leadership in the kingdom.

In addition to her role in succession, the Asantehemaa is the leader of women across Asanteman and serves as a close adviser to the Asantehene.

She also helps resolve disputes involving marriages, families and other customary issues brought before the traditional authorities.
