The lead investigator of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Frank Marshal Cromwell, has told the Accra High Court that he was not privy to the professional discussions between the former National Security Coordinator and the first accused person, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), regarding the transfer of the alleged GH¢49.1 million at the centre of the criminal trial.

During an intense cross-examination at Special Court 1 on July 7, 2026, by counsel for the accused, Samuel Atta Akyea, Cromwell admitted that he could not speak to the discussions that preceded the signing and movement of the funds.

When counsel put it to him, "Cromwell, you were not privy to the professional discussions between the National Security Coordinator and A1 (Adu-Boahene) regarding the cheques," the EOCO investigator replied, "No, my lord."

The witness further acknowledged that he was unable to say whether the then National Security Coordinator understood the destination and purpose of the transactions before signing the cheques.

When Atta Akyea suggested that "the National Security Coordinator was a signatory to the three cheques and understood where the cheques were lodged and for what purposes," Cromwell responded, "My lord, I cannot tell."

The defence questioned whether the investigator understood the National Security rationale behind the movement of funds. Counsel argued that he "doesn't appreciate the National Security purpose of why monies were first moved from the BNC Communications Bureau Ltd account at UMB to the personal account of A1 and subsequently that a quantum of GH¢7.2 million was lodged in the Coordinator's account at the NSC at Fidelity."

The case has been adjourned to July 15, 2026, at 12:00 pm for the continuation of the cross-examination of the prosecution's fourth witness.
