Legendary English footballer Ian Wright has criticised the decision to overlook a foul leading to Argentina’s third goal, which sealed their 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The North African side had taken a 2-0 lead, but one of their goals was disallowed after an Egyptian player was adjudged to have fouled Martínez in the build-up.

The three-time world champions staged a dramatic comeback after Lionel Messi and Cristian Romero pulled back two goals to level the score. In stoppage time, Enzo Fernández headed in the winner.

However, Mohamed Salah appeared to be involved in a clumsy challenge before the goal, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) did not review it as they had done earlier for Argentina.

Reacting to the incident, Ian Wright argued that Salah was fouled in the penalty box in the lead-up to the goal and insisted VAR should have checked when Egypt protested.

Speaking as a pundit on ITV, the Arsenal legend said Argentina’s third goal should not have stood.

"That’s what’s happening with VAR now, they’re pulling it back. If you’re going to pull it back for Argentina on the edge of the box to disallow a goal, you have to pull it back for this one with Mo Salah. He’s been caught. Whatever we say, it might be minimal, but he’s been caught, and then they go up the other end," he fumed.

The officiating decisions have sparked mixed reactions among fans, with some accusing the referee of bias while others believe the right calls were made.
