Oliver Barker-Vormawor says he has been denied access to his client
Oliver Barker-Vormawor, private legal practitioner and lawyer for Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, has revealed that his client has been rushed to the Police Hospital amid ongoing concerns about his detention and impending extradition to the United States of America.
In an update shared on his Facebook page on July 8, 2026, Barker-Vormawor expressed deep frustration over the lack of access to his client, noting that it has been over a week since lawyers have been allowed to meet with Abu Trica despite repeated requests.
“It has been over a week; we haven’t been allowed access to Abu Trica as lawyers.
"In fact, we have no idea where he is being held, and Interpol, which first had custody of him, says they don’t have him,” Barker-Vormawor said.
He added that even Interpol, which initially had custody, claims it no longer holds him.
He further announced plans to file a habeas corpus application if authorities continue to deny Abu Trica his basic right to legal counsel.
"We will be filing a habeas corpus application by tomorrow if the Republic continues to deny him something as basic as his right to counsel," he stated.
Barker-Vormawor also criticised what he described as the treatment of Ghanaian citizens to appease foreign interests.
“Let’s keep treating our citizens as animals to please the FBI. We are doing well. Today, it’s a supposed ‘fraud boy’. Tomorrow it will be a politician,” he said.
This development comes shortly after Abu Trica’s controversial television interview, which his lawyer had publicly distanced himself from, noting it was not advisable during active proceedings.
Abu Trica faces extradition to the US on allegations of involvement in a romance scam and wire fraud scheme reportedly amounting to about $8 million (though his legal team has disputed the figure in previous statements).
Recent court proceedings saw the High Court in Accra grant an extradition order, after which Abu Trica’s whereabouts became unclear to his legal team.
Barker-Vormawor had previously made oral applications in court seeking disclosure of his client’s location and access.
