The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has charged the currently commissioned brigades under the government's 'Feed Ghana Programme' to serve as a key player in increasing food production and helping the country reduce its dependence on imported food.

The Feed Ghana Programme, which was introduced by the government, seeks to increase agricultural productivity, strengthen food security, reduce the country's food import bill, and promote sustainable farming through improved extension services, mechanisation, and access to modern farming technologies.

Deployment of the brigades is also expected to provide farmers with the technical support needed to increase yields and improve productivity across the country.

Addressing the newly commissioned officers on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, the minister reminded them of how critical their responsibilities are in transforming Ghana's agricultural sector and improving the livelihoods of farmers.

"My dear brigadiers, you are stepping into your roles at a defining moment. The country expects much from you, and you must therefore serve with humility, discipline, honesty, patriotism, and urgency. We are not waiting for the future, we are building it now," he said.

The minister also noted that the success of the programme will largely depend on the dedication, discipline, and professionalism of the brigades who have been deployed to provide extension services, technical support, and modern farming techniques to farmers across the country.

A total of 506 brigades, made up of 420 men and 86 women, were commissioned on Wednesday, July 8, to support the implementation of the Feed Ghana Programme, one of the government's flagship agricultural initiatives aimed at boosting local food production, improving food security, and creating jobs in the agriculture sector.

He added that the government's vision is to make Ghana more self-sufficient in food production while creating employment opportunities through agriculture.

"We are not waiting for others to feed us but preparing to feed ourselves. We are creating jobs through production, organising, training, and investing to transform agriculture," the minister stated.
