The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has revealed that Ghana's economic development has expanded by 4.7 percent in April 2026 compared to the same period last year, with the services sector emerging as the biggest driver of growth.
According to a report, released on July 8, 2026, by GSS reveals that the MIEG index rose to 113.3 in April 2026 from 108.2 recorded in April 2025, reflecting improved performance across agriculture, industry and services.
However, the services sector recorded the strongest growth of 6.0 percent and accounted for 61.7 percent of the overall expansion in economic activity, making it the largest contributor to the country's growth during the month.

Industry grew by 4.0 percent and contributed 29.9 percent, while agriculture expanded by 1.7 percent, contributing 4.5 percent to total growth.
"The services sector was the main contributor to April 2026 growth at 61.7 percent to the overall growth of 4.7 percent in economic activities." the statement noted.
The report also explained that growth in agriculture was largely driven by improvements in the crops and livestock subsectors, while increased activity in mining and quarrying boosted the performance of the industry sector.
GSS noted that the MIEG provides an early measure of changes in economic activity before the release of quarterly Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures.
"The MIEG gives users a reliable early indication of movements in economic activity before the quarterly release. It also allows users to see the percentage contribution to the total growth from the main sectors," the report said.
The statistical service explained that the indicator covers all economic activities captured in the quarterly GDP system and is compiled using monthly volume indicators and administrative records. These are adjusted for inflation using the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) to ensure consistency with quarterly national accounts.
However, the GSS cautioned that the MIEG remains an experimental statistic and is subject to continuous improvement.
It also noted that the index is currently not seasonally adjusted, meaning only year-on-year comparisons can be made, while revisions may occur for up to two years as additional data becomes available and is reconciled with quarterly and annual national accounts.
