Nii Lantey responds to Minority's criticism of emergency flood funding

A former National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has defended the government’s decision to mobilize funds to tackle the recent disaster caused by floods.

According to him, the president acted on his constitutional authority.

Lantey Vanderpuye explained that emergency situations demand swift action, emphasizing that the country’s public financial management framework provides contingency measures to tackle such situations.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on July 9, 2026, he said, “The budget did not anticipate that. And I said, as we have done in this country and according to our public financial management, there is always a buffer, what we call contingency. If we did not expect those things to happen, constitutionally we would not have that contingency fund.”

“So, when it happens, based on preliminary investigation and assessment, the president, on exercising his executive powers, instructed the Minister of Finance to look for this money in order to take care of the emergency that has happened. So, they had referred to the contingency fund,” he added.

He further condemned the Minority for using the media to express their grievances instead going through the right channel to seek clarification.

“I'm surprised that you have a whole Minority having the power of using parliamentary procedures to get answers to questions that are bothering them but will not exercise that. They just go and [hold] press conferences,” he said.
