Watch as Finance Minister joins Alajo clean-up exercise

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has joined residents of Alajo in Accra for a clean-up exercise aimed at restoring sanitation in communities affected by the devastating June 29 floods.

The June 29 floods severely affected several communities in the Greater Accra Region, including Alajo, Adabraka, Kaneshie, Odawna, and parts of Weija, prompting renewed calls for improved sanitation, regular desilting of drains, and stricter enforcement of environmental regulations to minimise the impact of future flooding.

The exercise forms part of the government's two-day National General Cleaning Exercise, which seeks to clear choked drains, remove debris, and reduce the risk of further flooding ahead of the expected rains.

On Friday, July 10, 2026, Dr Forson, together with local residents, sanitation workers, and officials from various state institutions, took part in desilting drains and clearing waste that had accumulated following the floods, which claimed lives, displaced thousands of residents, and destroyed homes, businesses, and public infrastructure in parts of the country.

The government said the exercise is aimed at improving environmental sanitation, preventing disease outbreaks, and ensuring that drainage systems are cleared before another spell of heavy rainfall.

Friday's clean-up involved personnel from the security services, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), waste management companies, and other government agencies, while members of the public are expected to participate in the second day of the exercise.
