The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has joined a clean-up exercise at the Agbogbloshie Market in Accra as part of efforts to support the government’s National Clean-Up Exercise.

Dr Asiama, accompanied by the First Deputy Governor, Dr Zakari Mumuni, and other officials of the central bank, participated in the exercise aimed at promoting environmental sanitation and healthy communities.

Speaking after the activity on July 10, 2026, the BoG Governor stressed the importance of maintaining clean surroundings, describing sanitation as a collective responsibility that benefits the entire country.

“The Bible says cleanliness is next to godliness, but I think cleanliness is godliness. So it is mandatory, even as individuals, to ensure that we are clean and that our environment is clean,” he said.

Dr Asiama also used the occasion to highlight the need for proper handling of the Ghana cedi, warning that poor sanitation practices could affect the cleanliness of banknotes and pose public health risks.

“We want our banknotes to always be clean because research has shown that bacteria can be present on banknotes if they are not properly handled,” he said.

He reaffirmed the Bank of Ghana’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote environmental sustainability, public health and responsible currency management.

The Governor pledged that the central bank would continue to support future clean-up exercises and other initiatives aimed at improving sanitation across the country.

The National Clean-Up Exercise forms part of government’s response to recent flooding incidents and efforts to improve sanitation, clear blocked drains and reduce the risk of future disasters.
