According to eyewitness accounts, the man had allegedly thrown the refuse into a drain
A video of a young man being made to pick up rubbish he had dumped in a gutter with his shirt has gone viral on social media.
The video, captured by Asaase News, showed the young man being publicly disciplined by a soldier at Danquah Circle in Accra after he was caught throwing rubbish into a gutter that was being cleaned as part of President John Dramani Mahama's two-day national cleanup exercise.
The video shows the soldier ordering the young man, dressed in a white shirt and brown trousers, to climb into the large drainage system and retrieve the refuse he had dumped, with journalists and members of the public looking on.
In a dramatic turn, the soldier went further, instructing the young man to remove his white shirt and use it to gather the rubbish he was picking up from inside the gutter.
According to eyewitness accounts, the man had allegedly thrown the refuse into the drain moments while a task force, operating under the supervision of military personnel, was cleaning the area.

The incident occurred on the first day of the two-day national cleanup exercise ordered by President Mahama in the wake of the devastating June 29 floods, which killed dozens of people and destroyed homes and businesses across the country.
The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs had earlier warned that the full force of the law would be brought to bear on anyone who flouted the directive, stating that the heads of the security agencies, including the military, were firmly on board.
