Watch as AMA task force clash with vendors who defied national clean-up directive

Dramatic scenes have emerged from Day One of President John Dramani Mahama's two-day national cleanup exercise, with Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) task force officials clashing with vendors who defied the directive to suspend business activities and participate in the exercise.

Videos circulating on social media and shared by 1957 News captured task force members attempting to seize cooked food from vendors, who put up fierce resistance, struggling to hold on to their wares as officials tried to take them away.

In other scenes, vendors were seen hurriedly packing up their goods and fleeing the area to avoid having their items confiscated, while task force members were spotted loading seized goods onto a truck.

The clashes came after the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs had issued a stern warning ahead of the exercise that all markets and shops across the Greater Accra Region must be closed, cautioning that anyone who defied the President's directive would face consequences.

"If you go and open your shop, you will be on fire," the minister had warned, adding that the Inspector General of Police, the Chief of Defence Staff and the Controller General were all on board to enforce compliance.

The national cleanup exercise was ordered by President Mahama in the aftermath of the devastating June 29 floods, which claimed at least 34 lives and destroyed homes and businesses across the country.
