Kpebu says Ghana hoped to receive Ofori-Atta as Abu Trica was extradited
Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has disclosed that there were initial plans to delay the extradition of Ghanaian socialite Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, until former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta had also been returned to Ghana.
Speaking on TV3’s The KeyPoints on Saturday, July 11, 2026, Kpebu said although it was expected that Abu Trica would eventually be extradited, there was a belief that coordinating the process with Ofori-Atta’s return would have been more beneficial to Ghana.
“We all knew that someday, somehow, it was possible that Abu Trica would be extradited, but we were hoping to delay it as much as possible until Ken Ofori-Atta was also brought back,” Kpebu said.

He explained that the expectation was for both events to occur simultaneously, with Ghana handing over Abu Trica while receiving Ofori-Atta in return.
“Until Ken Ofori-Atta is also brought, or we do an exchange. At the time we are handing over Abu Trica, we are also receiving Ofori-Atta,” he stated.
Kpebu stressed that the issue was not opposition to Abu Trica’s extradition but rather the timing of the process.
“So as for extradition, it wasn’t a problem,” he added, explaining that the preferred approach was to synchronise Abu Trica’s extradition with efforts to secure Ofori-Atta’s return to Ghana.
Kpebu’s comments suggest that the earlier consideration was to coordinate the two developments, a strategy he believes would have better served Ghana’s national interest.
