GACL deploys new security screening equipment at Accra International Airport

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has announced the deployment of new state-of-the-art security screening equipment at passenger screening checkpoints in Terminals 2 and 3 of the Accra International Airport.

According to GACL, the upgrade is aimed at strengthening aviation security while making the screening process smoother and less stressful for travellers.

In a press statement issued on July 12, 2026, the company said one of the key changes passengers will notice is that laptops and other large electronic devices will no longer need to be removed from cabin baggage during screening.

The new technology is designed to detect potential threats while electronic devices remain inside bags, reducing the need for passengers to unpack items at security checkpoints.

Passengers will also be allowed to keep their shoes and belts on during screening unless otherwise required as part of security profiling.

The new system will also change how Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGs) are handled. Travellers can now keep LAGs in their cabin baggage during screening, as separate screening of these items may no longer be required.

However, GACL stressed that existing international regulations remain in place, meaning liquids in containers exceeding 100ml are still prohibited.

To further improve efficiency, GACL has introduced an Automatic Tray Return System, which is designed to quickly return trays to passengers after screening, making it easier and faster to repack items and reduce congestion at checkpoints.

The company noted that the transition to the new system will be carried out in phases to ensure a smooth rollout without disrupting airport operations.

GACL has urged passengers and other stakeholders to cooperate with airport officials as the new equipment is introduced and becomes fully operational.
