Dr Bawumia and the late Dagbon overlord at an event
Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed his sadness over the death of the Overlord of Dagbon, Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II.
In a statement issued on Monday, July 13, 2026, Dr Bawumia extended his condolences to the chiefs and people of Dagbon, describing the late Yaa-Naa’s passing as a major loss to the kingdom and Ghana.

He said Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II assumed the throne during a difficult period in Dagbon’s history and played a key role in promoting peace, unity and development.
“His reign was short but greatly impactful. Through his wise leadership, he united families once broken and healed a society greatly fractured before him,” Dr Bawumia stated.
The former Vice President said the late Dagbon overlord successfully combined tradition with modern leadership and worked to attract development projects to the area.
Dr Bawumia added that he personally benefited from the late Ya-Na’s guidance during his time in government and as the NPP’s presidential candidate.
“At the personal level, I benefited immensely from his counsel during my time as Vice President of Ghana and later, as the Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party,” he said.
He noted that visits to the Gbewaa Palace provided him with opportunities to seek the wisdom and advice of the traditional ruler.
“It was always an honour to pay him homage at the ancient Gbewaa Palace and to draw from his immeasurable wisdom and guidance,” he added.
Dr Bawumia described the death of Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II as a painful moment for him, Dagbon and the entire country.
“His passing marks a great loss to me, to the Dagbon Kingdom, and to Ghana as a whole,” he stated.
