Why the Ofankor-Nsawam road project is facing delays

The Ofankor-Nsawam road project, aimed at improving traffic flow along one of Ghana’s busiest corridors, has encountered setbacks due to compensation disputes involving affected persons, construction consultant Kwabena Bempong has disclosed.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on July 13, 2026, he explained that although persons whose properties are affected by road projects are entitled to compensation, the process often becomes a major obstacle to timely completion.

"..On the Ofankor-Nsawam road, just when we had pushed, and pushed and the government came in, people said they were no more interested and they will not accept the money given to us", he noted.

Bempong said addressing compensation-related challenges more efficiently would help accelerate work on the Ofankor-Nsawam project and other major road infrastructure developments across the country.

According to him challenges with compensation are common across many road projects in the country, particularly those involving road widening and expansion.

“The challenges we have on our road projects are similar across board,” he said.

He explained that road expansion projects often require the relocation of utility infrastructure, including electricity, water and telecommunications lines, as well as, the removal of structures that have encroached on road reservations.

“You are widening the roads; there are electricity lines, water lines, telecom lines; people have encroached on the roads. These are the persons affected by the project,” he stated.

The project, which began in July 2022, was expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2026.

It is one of the major transport infrastructure initiatives aimed at improving mobility along the congested Accra-Kumasi Highway corridor.

The route which serves as a key link between Accra and other parts of the country, has for years faced severe traffic congestion due to increasing population growth, rapid urbanisation and rising vehicular movement.

The project involves expanding the existing road capacity, improving traffic flow and upgrading critical sections of the corridor.

However, its progress has been affected by challenges including compensation disputes with affected property owners and delays in relocating utility lines, slowing the pace of construction.
