General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has cautioned the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to tread carefully in its handling of arrests of political opponents.
Speaking to journalists at the forecourt of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Monday, July 13, 2026, where party communications team member Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has been detained, Kodua accused the government of using arrests as a means to divert public attention from what he described as poor governance and alleged attempts to extend presidential term limits.
He stressed that the government should be worried about the manner in which it is pursuing opposition figures, warning that such actions could deepen political tensions.
“If this is the strategy to divert attention, then it has failed woefully. The New Patriotic Party is a strong party. We have men who are resilient, men who will not be coerced by tactics of intimidation. And I can assure you that we shall bounce back in 2028. But when the tables turn, appointees of this government should be very worried,” he declared.

He further accused President John Mahama of attempting to divert public attention from what he claims is a hidden agenda to extend his stay in office beyond the constitutional limit.
He added that Mahama cannot be the “Mobutu Sese Seko or Iddi Ami” of Ghana, stressing that the constitution makes it clear that every president is limited to two terms in office.
“It is a shame on our democracy, a shame for the struggle that all of us have made and that our forefathers made to bring this country to this point. Yet, the NDC government under His Excellency John Mahama wants to take us backwards. We know that with all that is happening, there is a hidden agenda, an attempt to divert attention from what the president is seeking to do by pursuing a third term,” he stated.
“He doesn’t want Ghanaians to talk about it or comment on it, so distractions are being thrown in to shift focus. But Mr President, you cannot be the ‘Omanhene’ of Ghana. You cannot be the ‘Mobutu Sese Seko or Iddi Ami’ of Ghana.
“…The constitution is clear: two terms mean two terms. These antics will not take our minds off what the government wants to do by extending the tenure of the presidency,” he added.
