Eric Opoku calls for stronger private sector support for agriculture growth

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has called on Ghanaians and corporate institutions to support initiatives aimed at strengthening agriculture and honouring the contributions of farmers to national development.

He said agriculture remains the backbone of Ghana’s economy, stressing that government’s Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda is focused on modernising the sector, creating jobs, improving livelihoods and ensuring food security.

“Agriculture remains the backbone of Ghana’s economy. Under President John Dramani Mahama’s Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda, we are committed to modernising agriculture, creating jobs, improving livelihoods and ensuring food security for every Ghanaian,” he said.

MoFA secures GH¢1.06m private-sector support for headquarters renovation

The Minister made the remarks during a ceremony to announce 3TREES Ghana Painting Ltd’s sponsorship of the renovation and repainting of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s (MoFA) national headquarters under the government’s Brighten Ghana Initiative.

The project, which is being undertaken at no cost to government, covers painting materials, labour, equipment, scaffolding and other related works.

Opoku commended 3TREES Ghana Painting Ltd for its contribution, describing the gesture as an example of how businesses can support national development through corporate citizenship.

“We commend 3TREES Ghana Painting Ltd for setting an outstanding example of corporate citizenship. By fully sponsoring the renovation of our national headquarters at no cost to government, they have demonstrated that businesses can make meaningful contributions to national development,” he said.

He noted that the renovation of the Ministry’s headquarters carries both practical and symbolic significance, describing the facility as the “home of every farmer in Ghana.”

“This Ministry is the home of every farmer in Ghana. Seeing it renewed through the generosity of 3TREES Ghana Painting Ltd carries both practical and symbolic significance for the agricultural community,” he added.

The Minister also appealed to individuals and corporate organisations to support the upcoming 42nd National Farmers’ Day celebration, scheduled for December 4, 2026.

He described the annual event as a national tribute to farmers whose hard work contributes to food production and economic development.

“The 42nd National Farmers’ Day is not merely a celebration; it is our national tribute to the hardworking men and women whose dedication feeds our nation. Every Ghanaian and every corporate institution has a role to play in supporting this important occasion,” Opoku stated.

He emphasised that investments in farmers translate into broader economic benefits, including increased food production and improved agricultural productivity.

“Every cedi invested in our farmers is an investment in Ghana’s future. Supporting Farmers’ Day strengthens food production, boosts agricultural productivity and contributes directly to affordable food for our people,” he said.

Opoku further explained that the Brighten Ghana Initiative goes beyond improving the appearance of public buildings, noting that it seeks to restore pride in public institutions and create better working environments.

“To Brighten Ghana is about more than painting buildings. It is about restoring pride in our public institutions, improving working environments and creating facilities that reflect the aspirations of a modern Ghana,” he stated.
