'I was addicted to sex and hard drugs' - Former sakawa girl opens up about troubled past

A former sakawa girl has opened up about the mistakes she made in her younger years, recounting how she became involved in internet fraud, a sham marriage and substance abuse.

Speaking in an interview, sighted by GhanaWeb on July 15, 2026, she explained that she became entangled in internet fraud in her early twenties after joining a group of sakawa boys who operated from a dedicated office where they carried out their fraudulent activities.

According to her, after giving birth, she expressed a desire to travel abroad, prompting her associates to connect her with a 78-year-old British man in what she described as a marriage of convenience.

"After I had given birth, I told them I wanted to travel out of the country, so they linked me to a 78-year-old British man for marriage.

"I was 24 years old when I married him. When I got to the UK, it didn't take long for him to realise who I really was. We were simply incompatible, and at the time I was addicted to sex, hard drugs and clubbing," she recounted.

She further disclosed that she later discovered the elderly man had allegedly been defrauded of his life savings by her associates, a situation that strained their relationship after she arrived in the UK.

According to her, the marriage eventually broke down, and the man initiated deportation proceedings against her. She said the experience left her depressed and caused her to sink deeper into substance abuse.

"I became vulnerable while dealing with the deportation process and would go with any man I fancied. I cannot count the number of men I slept with," she said.

Reflecting on her past, the former sakawa girl said she deeply regrets the choices she made and hopes her story serves as a cautionary tale for young people who may be tempted by fraudulent schemes and the pursuit of quick wealth.
