'We need a break from divisive politicking' - Barker-Vormawor on constitutional reforms

Private legal practitioner and activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has called for Ghana's constitutional reform process to mark a turning point away from divisive politics and toward national unity.

In a Facebook post shared on July 15, 2026, Barker-Vormawor expressed hope that the government's position paper would provide a shared national vision and reflect Ghanaians' aspirations for meaningful constitutional reforms.

"It is my hope that the government position paper to be presented will unite us behind a common vision. As a nation, we need a new break from divisive politicking. And it is my sincere hope that the government is aligned with the sentiments of our people for clear, substantive and actionable reforms," he indicated.

According to him, the forthcoming document could be the most significant statement of a government's vision for Ghana since the adoption of the 1992 Constitution.

"This will be the most authoritative statement of a government's vision for this country since the 1992 resolve begat a renewed project of nation building. The 4th Republic," he stated.

Barker-Vormawor described the constitutional review exercise as a chance for national reflection and reconciliation, stressing the need to move beyond political divisions.

"The task ahead is one of true national communion over how we repair what the past has left behind for us, so that we can make tomorrow better," he noted.

He reiterated his support for meaningful constitutional changes, stating, "I believe in purposeful reforms."

His remarks come as the Attorney General is expected to present the government's vision for constitutional reform after a Cabinet meeting held on July 14, 2026.

The Attorney General is expected to unveil the government's constitutional reform position paper, outlining proposed changes to strengthen Ghana's governance framework.
