Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has demanded that the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, appear before Parliament to explain the circumstances surrounding the arrest and detention of Miracles Aboagye by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Aboagye, who is aspiring to become the National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was arrested and detained by EOCO, a development that has raised concerns from the Minority Leader.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the manner in which Aboagye was arrested raises concerns about Ghana’s democracy and human rights.
Addressing Parliament on July 14, 2026, the caucus leader demanded that the Attorney General must provide details on how EOCO conducts arrests, particularly in cases involving political figures.
“Mr Speaker, what is happening to Miracles Aboagye is not good for our democracy. The Attorney General should come to this house and brief us on how EOCO arrests people. The person is in the country and travelled, you arrest him in a rambo style at the airport, and is detained for over three days,” he said.
The Minority Leader also criticised the bail conditions imposed on Aboagye, particularly the demand for properties worth about GH¢50 million as security for his release.
He described the conditions as excessive and expressed concern over what he believes are unfair demands by EOCO.
He warned political leaders against supporting actions that could later affect them or members of their parties.
“Mr Speaker, they are demanding properties worth [GHC50 million] before he's granted bail. Let's be careful, my dear political colleagues, let's be careful Ghanaian political leaders. It can be somebody today. There is an election ahead, you can never tell. Don't let us encourage some of these excesses and when we talk about it, don't look at it with a partisan lens. It can be you,” he stated.
Afenyo-Markin said Aboagye was already dealing with the impact of the recent floods and that his detention had worsened his situation.
“Already the man was affected by the flood. He lost everything, he's already traumatised. Miracles Aboagye is already traumatised because of the flood. Then to worsen it, you detain him for three days and you say if he wants his freedom, he should bring properties worth GHC50 million,” he added.
He described the matter as a human rights issue rather than a partisan political matter and urged Parliament to seek clarity from the Attorney General.
“How do you do this? This is not something that must attract a partisan reaction. It is a human rights issue. The Attorney General must come to this house and brief us on what is happening. It is not good for the politics of our country,” he demanded.
The Effutu MP also claimed that some opposition lawmakers and party members had previously faced invitations from state investigative bodies after speaking on critical national issues.

“Some of my colleagues here, sometimes when they speak on critical issues, they get invitation to EOCO, BNI and all of that, we've kept quiet about it. Now, it has gotten to our party executives. We shouldn't do this to ourselves,” he fumed.
Meanwhile, Miracles Aboagye has been released from EOCO custody after meeting his bail conditions.
