Why Carlos Queiroz should lead Ghana to AFCON – Kofi Adams explains

The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has advocated for Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz to be retained as head coach of the Black Stars ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The former Egypt national team coach was offered a short-term contract to oversee Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, the Black Stars were eliminated by Colombia after a 1-0 defeat.

Speaking on the possible extension of Queiroz’s contract, the Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency said he would gladly welcome a decision by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to extend the coach’s stay, citing his performance at the World Cup.

He explained that Queiroz has given the Black Stars structure in every aspect of their game, describing it as “organic football,” and emphasized the importance of continuity.

“I support Queiroz staying as Black Stars coach. Continental competition is very key. If you look at our performance and compare it with teams that played structured, organic football, starting from defense through midfield to attack, you see one thing in common: these are teams that have played together recently in continental competitions.

"They had the opportunity and benefit of being at the AFCONs. We must take continental competition more seriously. We start our qualifications in September, and with only August between us and our first game against Côte d’Ivoire away, continuity is crucial. We all know the strength of that team, and anytime we face them, it’s always tough. So, you need a certain level of consistency,” he told JoyNews on PM Express.

Kofi Adams further stressed that Queiroz’s experience makes him the right manager to lead Ghana into AFCON qualification.

“This is not the time to introduce a new coach who has not had the opportunity to work with the majority of the team in a competitive era. You don’t want to keep experimenting. I want him because I see a coach who is intentional, who has a strategy. I have analyzed his approach and know it has worked for this phase of the game. He only needs to improve certain aspects to sustain proper game management that can deliver victory, even if it is by a single goal,” he added.

The GFA has yet to communicate publicly on Carlos Queiroz’s future, whether his contract will be extended or a new manager will be appointed.
