Ablakwa secured support of 123 UN countries for reparations resolution - President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has credited the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, with playing a leading role in securing international support for Ghana’s United Nations resolution on reparations for the transatlantic slave trade.

Speaking during his Resetting Ghana Tour in the Volta Region on July 16, 2026, President Mahama praised the North Tongu Member of Parliament for his diplomatic efforts, saying the minister’s extensive engagements with countries around the world helped build support for the historic resolution.

President Mahama said Ablakwa was responsible for much of the behind-the-scenes work that contributed to Ghana’s success at the United Nations, particularly in rallying countries to support the proposal.

“Every credit that I have attained on the international scene, it is he who has done the legwork. The UN Resolution on Reparations, it is he who did the traveling to convince all 123 countries to vote for us,” President Mahama said.

In March 2026, a United Nations General Assembly resolution proposed by Ghana was adopted, recognising transatlantic slavery as the “gravest crime against humanity” and calling for reparatory measures.

The resolution received support from 123 countries, while three countries voted against it, including the United States and Israel. Fifty-two countries abstained, including the United Kingdom and several European Union member states.

Although the resolution is not legally binding, its adoption marked a significant diplomatic milestone and renewed global discussions on the historical impact of the transatlantic slave trade.
