You can't be a Black Stars dancer at your level - Saddick Adams tells Gyan

Veteran sports journalist Saddick Adams has advised former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan to protect his legacy and demand a more influential role within Ghana’s national team setup rather than being reduced to a ceremonial figure.

Adams, while acknowledging Gyan’s remarkable contribution to Ghanaian football, said the legendary striker deserves greater recognition and should not allow himself to be treated merely as a mascot for the Black Stars.

The comments follow images from the 2026 World Cup, where legends from other countries were seen occupying prestigious seats alongside top football personalities, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino, while Gyan was seen in the Black Stars dressing room engaging with players and dancing with the team.

According to Adams, Gyan’s achievements place him among the biggest names in African football and his involvement with the national team should reflect that status.

“You saw where the Brazilian legends were sitting during games at the World Cup. They want to use our players as mascots. Gyan has achieved all in his football career and I’m happy he is included in the Black Stars’ management team. But you cannot play at this highest level and become a mascot. Someone who dances to entertain the team,” Adams said.

The journalist added that Gyan deserves a role with greater authority and respect, questioning why other Ghanaian football icons were not considered for similar recognition.

“I love Gyan, but he deserves more than just dancing with the team. Why would they not go to Abedi Pele, Anthony Baffoe, or Sulley Muntari for that?” he asked.
