Energy Minister inspects major Kumasi power upgrade project

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has inspected progress on the Kumasi–Anwomaso Transmission Line Upgrade (K1–K2 Project), describing it as a major investment aimed at improving the reliability and stability of electricity supply in Kumasi and the wider Ashanti Region.

According to a post shared on X by the Minister's spokesperson and Head of Communications at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Richmond Rockson, on Friday, July 17, 2026, the project is expected to significantly increase power transmission capacity while strengthening the region's electricity network.

"The Kumasi–Anwomaso Transmission Line Upgrade is a strategic investment aimed at strengthening electricity supply in Kumasi and the wider Ashanti Region," the statement said.

The Kumasi–Anwomaso Transmission Line Upgrade forms part of government's broader efforts to modernise Ghana's electricity transmission infrastructure and improve the quality and reliability of power supply to homes, businesses and industries in the Ashanti Region.

The project involves replacing the existing 19-kilometre, 364MVA single-circuit transmission line between the Anwomaso and Kumasi substations with a modern double-circuit transmission line rated at 2 × 488MVA (978MVA), more than doubling the current transmission capacity.

However, Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) is replacing one of the existing 66MVA transformers at the Kumasi (Ahodwo) Substation with a new 145MVA transformer to improve the reliability, resilience and stability of electricity supply.

"The new double-circuit transmission line will more than double the transmission capacity between the Anwomaso and Kumasi substations, while the new transformer will significantly enhance the reliability, stability and resilience of power supply," the statement noted.

The Minister also acknowledged that the project is entering its final phase, scheduled to begin on Monday, July 20, 2026, and cautioned that some customers may experience temporary and localised power interruptions to allow engineers to complete the works safely.

He appealed to residents and businesses in Kumasi and across the Ashanti Region to cooperate with the power utilities during the period.

"As the project enters its final phase, some customers may experience temporary and localised interruptions to electricity supply to enable the works to be carried out safely," the statement said.

Dr Jinapor assured the public that GRIDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) would work together to minimise the impact of the planned outages by providing advance notice and restoring electricity as quickly as possible.

"GRIDCo and ECG will work closely together to minimise disruptions, provide advance public notices and restore power supply as quickly as possible," the Minister assured.
