A heated exchange unfolded in Parliament on July 16, 2026, when Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo‑Markin and Attorney General Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine clashed during a debate on the Tribunals Bill 2026.
The dispute began when Afenyo‑Markin questioned the scope of the contested tribunal system, asking whether it would preside over civil or criminal matters.
While speaking on the floor of Parliament, Dr Ayine’s voice was heard in the background, advancing a counter-reaction.

This prompted the Minority Leader to insist that the Attorney General listen to his concerns, stressing that every member deserved the opportunity to contribute to the debate.
“Is it going to be in charge of civil matters or criminal matters, Mr Speaker? I am asking rhetorically. Respected learned, you must listen to me. You will have the opportunity to have a bite,” Afenyo‑Markin declared.
He further went on to criticise the Attorney General’s approach, describing it as unfair and procedurally flawed.
According to him, the Attorney General’s reliance on his standing at the Bar did not override parliamentary hierarchy.
As tempers rose, Afenyo‑Markin emphasised his seniority within the chamber, warning against what he claimed were attempts to introduce chaos into the proceedings.

“Respected learned Attorney General, first gentleman at the bar, this approach is wrong. You will have your bite,” he insisted.
“There is no point of order, Mr Speaker. What is wrong? I am your senior in this chamber… You must listen to me… I agree, but I am your senior here. Why are you introducing chaos? That is what the tribunal will do.
“What you are doing is what the tribunal will do. They should let us speak. This is the tribunal system,” he concluded while linking the AG’s conduct to the tribunal system under discussion.
