Legendary footballer Lionel Messi has rejected claims that the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) favors Argentina through officiating decisions at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Albiceleste recorded scrappy wins against Cape Verde, Egypt, and Switzerland in the knockout rounds of the tournament, with many accusing them of benefiting from referee bias.

The Argentine captain vehemently denied the allegations, describing them as baseless and unfounded, spearheaded by individuals seeking to discredit his team’s achievements.

Messi magic fires Argentina into the World Cup final

Messi emphasized that Argentina’s back-to-back World Cup finals appearances were not the result of refereeing influence but rather consistent performances. He highlighted that reaching five consecutive finals in recent years was proof of their hard work and dedication.

Speaking to the media after providing two assists in Argentina’s victory over England, Messi noted that critics may be furious with their success, but he believes diligence and unity brought them this far.

“No… It’s insane what we’ve achieved. Five finals in a row, two World Cup finals in a row… We’ve been the best over the last four years. Whoever it upsets, whatever they say, this team has shown it on the pitch. No one gives us anything for free. We played with pride, heart, with football… We completed a comeback. I’m happy and proud,” he said in post-match interview.

The football icon is now on course to make history by winning back-to-back World Cup titles, joining the ranks of international greats such as Pelé and Diego Maradona.
