'Practice what you preached' - Afenyo-Markin tackles NDC

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has aimed at the Mahama administration, accusing the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of failing to uphold the same accountability standards it vigorously championed while in opposition.

According to the Effutu Member of Parliament, the NDC was quick to call for investigations, arrests and resignations whenever allegations of financial misconduct surfaced under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

However, he argued that the party's approach has shifted since its return to power.

Speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning Show on Friday, July 17, 2026, Afenyo-Markin said recent findings by the Auditor-General (A-G) and observations by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) should be treated with the same seriousness the NDC demanded in the past.

"When it was the NPP in government, they relied heavily on the Auditor-General's reports. Today, when the report raises concerns about them, they say there are errors. That is an inconsistency," he said.

The Minority Leader also questioned the government's response to issues surrounding the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), arguing that concerns raised by the IMF over alleged financial losses warrant urgent investigations by state accountability institutions.

"The IMF has disclosed that the state has lost billions. Have the relevant institutions not seen these losses? Shouldn't these matters be investigated?" he questioned.

Afenyo-Markin contended that resources allegedly lost through poor policy decisions could have been channelled into critical sectors such as infrastructure and social development instead.

He further argued that accountability should remain a constant principle regardless of which political party occupies the presidency.

"If you believe in accountability while in opposition, you must uphold the same standards when you are in government. The principles should not change because you are now in power," he added.

He urged the Mahama administration to demonstrate the same commitment to transparency and accountability that it demanded of the previous government, insisting that Ghanaians expect public officials to be held to the same standard irrespective of political affiliation.
