Government accelerates road construction with GH¢40 billion 'Big Push' funding

President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that the government has committed more than GH¢40 billion to the Big Push infrastructure programme as work gathers pace on about 2,500 kilometres of roads across the country.

The President made the announcement on Thursday, July 16, 2026, during an inspection tour of ongoing road projects in the Volta Region as part of his Resetting Ghana Tour, where he expressed satisfaction with the progress of work under the flagship infrastructure initiative.

"Approximately 2,500 kilometres of roads are currently under construction nationwide under the Big Push programme," President Mahama said.

He explained that the government initially allocated more than GH¢13 billion to kick-start the programme and has since committed an additional GH¢30.8 billion this year to accelerate road construction nationwide.

According to the President, the investment forms part of the government's broader plan to modernise the country's transport infrastructure and improve connectivity to support economic growth.

President Mahama commended contractors working on the various projects, noting that some were ahead of schedule, and urged them to maintain the momentum to ensure timely completion.

"I am satisfied with the pace of work, and I encourage contractors to maintain the momentum so these projects are delivered on schedule," he stated.

Providing an update on projects in the Volta Region, the Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, announced that the Penyi-Denu Road has reached 75.68 percent completion, making it the most advanced project under the Big Push programme.

He added that rehabilitation works on the Kpetoe-Ave Afiadenyigba Road (Lot 7) are also progressing steadily, with physical completion currently at 45 per cent.

"The Penyi-Denu Road is on course to become the first fully completed road project under the Big Push programme," Agbodza said.

The Roads Minister expressed confidence that both projects would significantly improve transportation, enhance connectivity between communities, and stimulate economic activity across the Volta Region once completed.
