German coach Jürgen Klopp has come to the defense of his compatriot Thomas Tuchel following the backlash he is facing over his tactical approach in England’s 2-1 loss to Argentina.

Tuchel explained that his decision to adopt a defensive approach in the semi-final clash was aimed at closing spaces for the opponents and protecting England’s lead.

The Three Lions eventually succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to the defending champions after Anthony Gordon had opened the scoring. With about 30 minutes left to play, Tuchel switched to a back five and substituted Gordon and Declan Rice for defenders Nico O’Reilly and Ezri Konsa to reinforce the backline.

Messi provided two assists as Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez scored to overturn the scoreline. This triggered massive criticism from the English media and fans, who blamed Tuchel for the defeat.

However, Klopp rejected claims that Tuchel’s switch to a defensive system was primarily responsible for the loss, acknowledging that managing such a high-stakes game is complicated.

The former Liverpool manager argued that had Tuchel stuck to an attacking game and England still lost, critics would have chastised him all the same, insisting that Tuchel did his best.

“People always speak after the game like coaching is easy, like you just choose attack or defend and that’s it. It doesn’t work like this. Football is much more complex. I see the criticism of Tuchel for trying to defend the 1-0 lead, but let me tell you something: if he didn’t do that, if he kept pushing forward and they conceded, the same people would be saying, ‘Why didn’t he control the game? Why didn’t he defend the lead?’

"In knockout football, whatever decision you make, someone will criticize you. I’m not saying every decision is perfect, but you have to understand the logic behind it. Managing a game at that stage is never simple,” Klopp said.
