We never saw this when Kufuor and Bawumia were attacked - NPP aspirant on Camilla case

New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Youth Organiser aspirant Atick Yakubu has questioned what he described as an inconsistency in the handling of comments made against political leaders, following the case involving TikToker Camilla Alhassan.

Speaking on Joy Prime, Yakubu said he disagreed with some of the comments made by Camilla but argued that similar remarks directed at former leaders did not receive the same response.

“I do not agree with some of the comments,” he said.

“But a lot of similar derogatory comments were made against President Kufuor and President and Vice President Bawumia. We never saw some of these things, where people are arrested, beaten, fast-charged and sentenced,” he added.

His comments follow the conviction of Camilla Alhassan by the Accra Circuit Court after she pleaded guilty to offensive conduct and the publication of false news.

The court sentenced her to one year in prison after she admitted to publishing claims that President John Dramani Mahama buried 32 cows as part of rituals to win the 2024 general election.

Yakubu said political opponents must be able to criticise each other but maintained that respect for public office holders remains important.

He said he has personally avoided making derogatory comments about President Mahama despite being a member of an opposition party.

“I have never directly insulted President Mahama in any derogatory way because that could be my anchor. If he were to be my anchor, I would be happy about it,” he said.
