Government unveils plan for 50,000 housing units to support teachers

The government has announced plans to construct 50,000 housing units nationwide under a new intervention dubbed the Teacher Dabre Initiative to ease the accommodation burden on teachers, especially those serving in rural areas.

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu made this known during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 20, 2026.

The housing programme, dubbed the Teacher Dabre Initiative, is expected to be rolled out nationwide through a decentralised approach, with the District Assemblies Common Fund taking the lead in implementation at the regional and district levels.

"We intend to construct 50,000 housing units for teachers all across the country. It is led by the District Assemblies Common Fund, so we want to decentralise it at the regional and district level," he said.

Iddrisu explained that the Ministry of Education would complement the project by mobilising additional financing to ensure its successful execution.

According to him, government is exploring the use of pension fund resources under the Ghana Secondary School Pension (GSOP) as collateral support to facilitate the construction of the housing units.

Beyond accommodation, the minister indicated that government is also close to introducing a financial incentive for teachers who willingly accept postings to rural and hard-to-reach areas.

"Apart from the 20% allowance for persons who are self-posting into rural areas, we are almost through," Iddrisu stated.

The proposed allowance, together with the housing initiative, forms part of broader efforts to improve teachers' working and living conditions while tackling the persistent challenge of attracting and retaining qualified educators in rural communities.

The government has maintained that strengthening teacher welfare remains critical to improving the quality of education and ensuring equitable access to qualified teachers across the country.
