Wontumi's arrest amounts to political imprisonment - NPP

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has described the 20‑year sentencing of the Party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi‑Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, as “political imprisonment.”

His remarks followed the July 20, 2026, judgment in which Chairman Wontumi was convicted on all six charges by Justice Audrey Kocuvie‑Tay of the Accra High Court.

In response, the NPP leadership convened an emergency meeting to deliberate on the ruling.

It was during this session that Kodua asserted the court’s conclusion amounted to nothing but political imprisonment, urging members to rally behind the Party’s leadership during this period.

“The New Patriotic Party has become aware of the judgment delivered today by the High Court in the case involving our Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

“Indeed, we consider the decision of the court as amounting to political imprisonment. Chairman Wontumi is a political prisoner,” he said.

Meanwhile, the sentencing has sparked widespread debate, with the Party’s legal team expected to appeal the judgement in the coming days.
