'They are treating us badly' - Ghanaian women stranded in Jordan recount ordeal

Two young Ghanaians who travelled to Jordan in search of employment have appealed to the government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for urgent assistance.

According to them, they have been living under harsh conditions and have also been prevented from returning home.

They travelled to Jordan in hopes of securing jobs but have since been left without work, adequate food, and decent accommodation.

In a video sighted by GhanaWeb on July 21, 2026, the two young women recounted how they arrived in Jordan in June 2026 with the hopes of securing a job.

“We are from Ghana. We came here in June to work, but there is no work for us. They are treating us badly.There is no food for us to eat, and where we have been sleeping is not good,” one stated.

They alleged that their movements were being monitored.

“Everywhere we go, there are cameras on us. We cannot do anything. The way they are treating us, we cannot even record,” he added.

The two aged 22 and 23 said they attempted to seek assistance from Ghana’s diplomatic authorities but discovered that Ghana does not have an embassy in Jordan.

They claimed that when they expressed their desire to return to Ghana, they were told to pay $1,920 before their departure could be arranged.

“They said we should pay money. The amount they gave us is $1,920. Our passports have also been seized. We beg for your support. We want to come back to Ghana,” one of them pleaded.

According to them they are often given only bread and cauliflower as their daily meal.

“This is what they give us a day, this bread and this cauliflower. If they give you this one today, unless the next day before they will still give you,” he said.

The two are calling on the government, relevant authorities, and members of the public to intervene to help them return safely to Ghana.
