SABC apologises for false Ebola report about Ghana

South African public broadcaster SABC has issued a televised apology after falsely reporting that Ghana had recorded 2,300 Ebola cases and 930 deaths.

The apology follows a strong rebuttal from Ghana’s Ministry of Health, which dismissed the report as false and assured the public that the country has not recorded any Ebola outbreak.

In a video sighted by GhanaWeb on July 21, 2026, an SABC News presenter acknowledged the error and apologised for the misinformation.

“SABC News incorrectly attributed Ebola statistics to Ghana. This happened during a broadcast last night on our news scroll at the bottom of your screen. SABC News regrets the error and apologises for any distress or inconvenience caused.”

The broadcaster further clarified that, according to Ghana’s Ministry of Health, the country has not recorded any case of the Ebola virus.

The presenter explained that Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh’s recent visits to Ghana’s points of entry, laboratories and treatment facilities were part of routine preparedness measures aimed at strengthening the country’s ability to prevent and respond to potential public health emergencies.

SABC stressed that the inspections should not be interpreted as evidence of an Ebola outbreak in Ghana.

The apology comes after the Ministry of Health condemned the initial report, describing it as false and misleading.

The erroneous report, which appeared on an SABC news ticker during one of its bulletins, claimed that Ghana’s Ebola cases had risen to 2,300, with hundreds of deaths.

The ministry reiterated that Ghana remains free of Ebola and urged the public to rely on verified information from official sources.

It added that the minister’s nationwide inspections were precautionary measures intended to ensure that Ghana’s health systems remain prepared to respond to any future public health threats.
