'I was livid and sad' - Miracles Aboagye on GH¢55m EOCO probe

New Patriotic Party (NPP) spokesperson and aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, says he was disheartened after learning that the Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) was investigating him over alleged financial and procurement-related irregularities involving about GH¢55 million during his tenure at the Inter‑Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation(IMCCoD).

In an interview on Asempa FM on July 22, 2026, he explained that his sadness was due to the fact that he was never informed by EOCO that he was being investigated over the matter, despite having appeared before the agency after it received a petition concerning him.

Aboagye said his sadness stemmed from the fact that he was never informed that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) was investigating him over the matter, despite having appeared before the agency after it received a petition concerning him.

“When I heard I was being investigated for GH¢55 million, I was livid. I was sad,” he said.

According to him, he first appeared before EOCO on April 28, 2026, accompanied by his lawyer, but was not informed about any specific allegations levelled against him.

“According to EOCO, they received a petition. I showed up with my lawyer. I didn’t spend even five minutes at their office. They informed me that they would get back to me. That was on April 28, 2026,” he said.

He explained that after the meeting, his lawyers followed up with EOCO, but the agency indicated that it would contact him whenever his presence was required.

Aboagye said there was no further communication between April and July until he travelled outside the country on July 4, 2026.

He said upon his return to Ghana, he was shocked when Immigration officials at the Accra International Airport informed him that his name had been placed on a stop list.

“If my name was on the stop list, I wouldn’t have been able to travel out of the country,” he said.

Aboagye said he was surprised because he had not received any invitation or communication from EOCO after his initial engagement.

“I was shocked and worried because it is terrorists who are put there. I even went on my phone to see if there was any message from them,” he said.

He said he subsequently went to EOCO’s office to seek clarification, adding that while the agency had the right to investigate petitions brought before it, citizens should be treated fairly during such processes.

“There is nothing wrong if they have received a petition and they are investigating, but you don’t treat citizens like that,” he added.

EOCO has stated that Aboagye’s arrest at the Accra International Airport was linked to alleged financial and procurement-related irregularities involving about GH¢55 million during his tenure at IMCCoD.

He has since been granted bail in the sum of GH¢50 million with three sureties, two of whom must be justified.
