You can't demand 'shoot to kill' and oppose jail terms - Barker-Vormawor

Private Legal Practitioner, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has condemned the public for their contradictory reactions to law enforcement.

In a post shared on social media on July 22, 2026, Barker-Vormawor questioned why some people support deadly judgments against suspects but object to long prison sentences.

“Every day, 'Shoot to kill’, 'Shoot to kill'. Today you are now complaining of a 20-year sentence,” he wrote.

The activist further questioned the kind of people the opponents of long prison sentences expect such sentences to be meted out to, adding that the lives of less privileged people or those from non-political backgrounds are mostly treated without compassion.

“Whose son should be killed? Poor children & non politicians dier their lives are worthless ong?,” he questioned.

His statement is a result of growing concerns arising from a 20-year jail sentence that was meted out to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The Criminal Court 4 Division of the High Court, presided over by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, on July 20, 2026, sentenced Chairman Wontumi to 20 years in prison with hard labour after finding him guilty on six counts.

Additionally, the court fined Wontumi 10,000 penalty units for each count.

The 20-year sentence has been met with a lot of opposition from some individuals and the minority in parliament.
