CAF awaits CAS verdict on Morocco-Senegal AFCON final dispute

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is still waiting for the final ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding the dispute that emerged from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal.

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe, addressing the media on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, confirmed that the organisation has not yet received a final decision from the world’s highest sports arbitration body as both teams continue to await the outcome.

“Regarding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, we are awaiting the final decision from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) concerning the dispute from the AFCON final between Morocco and Senegal,” Motsepe said.

The controversy followed the dramatic final between hosts Morocco and Senegal, which ended in a tense atmosphere after a late penalty decision and protests from the Senegalese team, which prompted the players to temporarily leave the pitch in protest.

Following the incident, Morocco’s football federation challenged the outcome, arguing that Senegal’s actions violated tournament regulations.

CAF’s Appeal Board later ruled that Senegal had forfeited the final, changing the result to a 3-0 victory in favour of Morocco.

The decision sparked further controversy, with the Senegalese Football Federation taking the matter to CAS in a bid to overturn CAF’s ruling and restore their status as AFCON champions.
