Spraying of cedi notes at events will stop - BoG warns

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced measures to end the practice of spraying cedi notes at public functions, describing it as inappropriate and one that should no longer be encouraged.

Speaking at the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press briefing on July 22, 2026, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, said a notice had already been issued to halt the practice, popularly known as "spraying," which involves individuals throwing or displaying cash during ceremonies and social gatherings.

Addressing the issue, he said the practice, including variations where money is presented in the form of "bouquets" and other decorative packages, would no longer be tolerated.

"Let me also add one practice that we want to discourage. Those who spread notes at functions. We are told they call it spraying. We are going to make sure that practice is stopped with immediate effect," he said.

He explained that steps were being taken to enforce the directive and ensure the practice was discontinued at public events.

"Those practices are not acceptable, and we are going to be emphasising that going forward," he added.

The move is aimed at curbing excessive displays of cash and addressing practices that encourage wasteful spending and undermine economic discipline.
