Ghana increases Commonwealth Games gold medal bonus

The government has increased the financial reward for Ghanaian athletes who win gold medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, according to the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams.

Adams revealed that gold medallists will now receive $10,000, representing a significant increase from the $2,000 reward offered at the previous Commonwealth Games.

Speaking to Sporty FM, the Sports Minister said the decision forms part of efforts to motivate Team Ghana athletes as they compete on the international stage.

He also disclosed that he would personally pledge an additional $1,000 bonus to every athlete who secures a gold medal at the Games.

“At the last Commonwealth Games, gold winners were to get $2,000. We have decided to increase the prize for any athlete who wins a gold medal to $10,000, along with an added bonus from myself of $1,000,” Adams said.

The Minister also insisted that Ghana’s representatives have received adequate preparation ahead of the competition, dismissing concerns that the team was not properly supported.

According to him, the government invested in a comprehensive preparation programme, including a training camp in Ghana before the athletes moved to Belfast to complete their final preparations.

“Government has invested diversely in Ghana's team for the Commonwealth Games. We camped them for some time in Ghana and then they left for Belfast to continue their training camp before the Games,” he added.
