'Every decision I take must serve Ghanaians' - President Mahama honours Atta Mills’ legacy

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to uphold the values of integrity, compassion and democratic governance championed by the late President John Evans Atta Mills, saying every decision taken by his administration will be guided by the interests of the Ghanaian people.

Speaking during a wreath-laying ceremony at Asomdwee Park in Accra on Friday, July 24, 2026, to mark the 14th anniversary of President Mills’ passing, Mahama said the values he learned while serving as Vice President under him continue to shape his approach to governance.

Reflecting on the responsibilities entrusted to him by Ghanaians, President Mahama said he often draws inspiration from the quiet wisdom, humility and steady temperament that characterised Professor Mills’ leadership.

“As I reflect on the responsibilities that the people of Ghana have entrusted to me today, I often recall his quiet wisdom and steady temperament. These values continue to remind me that every decision I take must ultimately serve the people of Ghana and strengthen the democratic institutions that will outlive us all,” he stated.

President Mahama noted that the best way to honour the memory of the late President is not only through annual commemorative ceremonies but also by upholding the principles he represented.

According to him, integrity in public service, respect for democratic institutions, tolerance of differing opinions, compassion for the vulnerable and inclusive national development are values that should continue to guide the country’s governance.

He further acknowledged that President Mills’ vision for a peaceful, just and prosperous Ghana remains unfinished and pledged to continue building on that legacy.

“His dream of a peaceful, just and prosperous Ghana remains a work in progress. And I pledge to the memory of Professor Mills that I shall continue to walk in the footsteps that he left,” President Mahama said.

The wreath-laying ceremony formed part of activities marking the 14th anniversary of the passing of President John Evans Atta Mills, who died in office on July 24, 2012.

Government officials, members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), family members and other dignitaries attended the ceremony to pay tribute to the late President’s legacy and contributions to Ghana’s democratic development.
