A&C Mall founder sacks long‑serving driver over fuel fraud

Founder of A&C Mall, Dr Andrew Kwaku Asamoah, has disclosed how he dismissed a driver who had worked for him for 17 years after uncovering what he described as a fuel procurement fraud during his three‑month stay in Geneva.

In an interview with Kofi Dey on YouTube, Dr Asamoah said he became suspicious after reviewing monthly fuel bills and noticing that purchases remained unchanged despite his absence from the country.

“I travelled to Geneva for three months. When I came back, I saw that the bill was much and the figures were strange. How can you be buying the same amount of fuel when I wasn’t even here?” he recounted.

When questioned, the driver claimed the fuel was used to “warm up” the vehicles while parked.

Dr Asamoah found the explanation unconvincing, noting that warming alone could not justify thousands of cedis in monthly fuel claims.

Further checks revealed that the driver had been approving fuel vouchers himself instead of seeking supervisor authorisation. Dr Asamoah alleged the scheme involved inflating claims, buying fuel worth GH¢200 but recording GH¢1,000 and sharing the difference.

“They would buy fuel worth GH¢200 but write GH¢1,000 on the voucher and share the difference,” he said.

Dr Asamoah said he dismissed the driver immediately after the discovery, despite appeals from the employee and family members to reconsider.
