Hanan's bankers alerted authorities over attempt to access frozen account – Deputy AG

Deputy Attorney-General, Justice Srem-Sai, has disclosed that it was the bankers of former National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) Chief Executive Officer, Hanan Aludiba, who alerted authorities after he allegedly attempted to access funds in a frozen bank account.

According to Justice Srem-Sai, investigators did not independently monitor Aludiba's banking activities but were informed by the financial institution after it detected what it considered a suspicious attempt to lift restrictions on the account.

Speaking on TV3's Hot Issues on Sunday, July 26, 2026, he dismissed suggestions that prosecutors had been "nosing around" the former NAFCO CEO's financial affairs.

"We don't work at the bank. It was his own bankers who alerted us that, 'There is something going on here that we don't think is right.' That is how we got to know. That's how we took the steps. It wasn't as if we were just nosing around," Justice Srem-Sai indicated.

He explained that Aludiba, who was aware that a court order had frozen the account, allegedly took steps to persuade the bank to restore access.

Justice Srem-Sai said the bank declined the request and immediately notified investigators, prompting the prosecution to take further action.

"Our suspicion, of course, is that it was an attempt because the bank stopped it. They did not comply with his request and they called us in. So, we can only say that it was an attempt. We believe that it was an attempt," he stated.

He said the development formed part of the prosecution's assessment that Aludiba posed a greater flight risk than initially believed, particularly after investigators also learned of his travel arrangements, including the amount of luggage he intended to carry on a planned trip to the United Kingdom.

Justice Srem-Sai further rejected reports that a court later granted Aludiba permission to travel, insisting that the timeline originally granted by the court had expired and that no fresh application for leave to travel was made or approved.
